This book is my favorite in the series thus far - tons of character development with some of our old favorite side characters (Kylon, Claudia, even Komnene from the first Ghost book), old foes (Jadriga), as well as new foes, including an ancient power. More history is given here about Maat, the Great Necromancers of its time, and the Magesterium during its darkest moments of the Fourth Empire. That was my favorite thing about this book.Claudia and Corvalis also make leaps with their character development - if you were on the fence on whether or not you liked them from previous installments of the Ghosts, you'll definitely make up your mind in this one.
This book brought a lot of things together or expanded upon them from previous books. The introduction of another skill/job in the Ghosts ranks, more details on bloodcrystals (there's more than just green ones, folks!), an ancient order that allies itself with the Ghosts to fight a common enemy, and the strongest foe Caina has yet to face.
Can't wait for the next book in the series, thankfully Mr. Moeller does an excellent job in getting these out for his audience quickly, so we only have to wait until the first quarter of 2014 to continue at the semi-cliff hanger that this book leaves off at.

The Ghosts series may not be great fiction or stand the test of time fifty (50) years down the road, but they are solid reads and give me enjoyment. The main characters are likable and villains are villainous and the story heroic. I cut my teeth on REH's blue-eyed barbarian and this takes me back to the halcyon reading of my youth. Good Job.
Read the first books and quickly purchased the next in the series as the suspense was excellent. See my review for the first 3 books in the series. Starting to get predictable.
Although you can pick up any of the Ghost books and read as a stand alone, it is probably better to read the first book first to get the feel for why the main character is the way she is. This book speaks a little more about her title of demon slayer is more than her using a myth to her advantage as she thought, and explains more about her nemises.
Editing needs a little more work but I enjoy this series enough to hope someone will make it into a TV or Netflix series
A literal blast from the past on a number of levels. We explore the fall of the ancient Magisterium, more of Moroaica and more of Caina being great. Overall for a series this long, this is a great addition, setting up the endgame of the story arc, while at the same time not suffering for it as a standalone volume. Bonus points for the doomsday weapon design.
The Ghost series keep getting better and better. I have to make myself read another book just so I relish the Ghost book.
Moeller has done a great job with the story line n the characters. My favorite is Kylon. I just think that he is a guy who is doing what he can to save his home bc of his sister's mistake. But some how is able to get back into the Empire and help his cause along with Caina and the Ghosts. The character that I'm missing more and more is Halfdan. Not much of a showing in this book. But still love the series. Maybe there will a movie made about the series????
Claudia has come to terms with her new life on the borders. She has hidden her sorcery and is finally feeling content. She would like to see her brother again and perhaps the strange cult activity outside the city walls will mean a visit. Unfortunately it will mean alot more than that - unless Caina can stop it, it could mean the end of civilization.
